AJ Fernandez Cigars Last Call 8/27/16

Appearance 

The medium brown wrapper has very little vein on the surface. The couple that are present are very small and thin. The seams are tight. The cigar has a very light oil sheen.

Aroma

Earthy with some hay and dried fruit on the wrapper. Foot is completely closed by excess wrapper folded over. 

Prelight Draw 

Earthy cedar, blk licorice, hay and a hint of spice.

1st

The initial draws bring earth and wood together. A few draws later the spice joins and begins to develop. The draw is just right. The burn is a bit uneven. The ash is light gray and mostly tight. The burn has fully self corrected. Nice leather notes join the profile. 

2nd

The earth,cedar,warm cinnamon spice & leather are all present and well balanced to start the 2nd/3rd. The draw even opened up a tick. The burn is still spot on. It has a nice long finish with the warm cinnamon lasting the longest. The cigar has very good smoke production. Strength is at medium+. Light coffee notes join the profile. 

Final/3rd

Nice smooth bready notes join the profile. Strength is at the low end of med/full.

Serino Royale Connecticut Torpedo 8/25/16

Appearance 

A beautiful torpedo! With its light brown Ecuadoran Connecticut wrapper which has only 1 prominent vein on its surface. The seams are tight and not easy to find. It has a light oil sheen. It appears to be well packed with no spongy area's.

Aroma 

Barnyard and a pinch of spice on the wrapper. Cedar & citrus sweetness with a hint of spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw 

Honey,citrus,cedar,floral and spice.

1st

The initial draws bring a floral/citrus blast. The cedar is also present, with the spice beginning to develop a few draws later. The draw is a bit snug but that is typical in torpedo's. The burn is slightly uneven. The ash is light gray and mostly tight. Near the end of 1st the profile gets very creamy. 

2nd

Just into the 2nd and the profile transitions, the floral/citrus notes recede and are replaced by cedar/coffee bean notes. The slight bitterness of the coffee bean(normal) is tempered by the overall creamy texture of the profile. The draw opened up about the 1/2way point of the cigar. The burn had begun to self correct but by the end of this 3rd is off by 45*. 

Final/3rd

Strength which started at medium is now at med/full. Burn is self correcting again. Spice is a warm cinnamon. The burn fully self corrected at the end of the cigar. 

Overall the Serino Royale Connecticut Torpedo provided a very enjoyable smoking experience. A balanced full flavor and creamy textured cigar. The full balanced flavor profile makes it easy to overlook the uneven burn.

Serino Royals Medio Robusto Gordo 8/24/16

Appearance 

The milk chocolate colored Ecuadoran Habano Claro wrapper has a few prominent veins. The nice tight seams are well done. The cigar is well but not overly packed with filler tobacco. There is a nice oily sheen on the wrapper. The bands are exquisite. 

Aroma 

Earthy,woody & sweet on the wrapper. Earthy,cedar,red fruit like plum at the foot. 

Prelight Draw 

Black licorice, raisin, cedar and a hint of spice on the lips and tongue.

 

1st

The initial draws bring lots of smoke and flavor. Notes of cedar, bread and a hint of spice. A thought that keeps coming to mind is a soft, warm buttery dinner roll with a warm mild spice kick. The ash is medium gray and mildly flaky. Draw is spot on. Burn has a slight wave. There is a very faint citrus note, just enough to put a little tang in my cheeks. The spice is a nutmeg with a pinch of white pepper. Burn has fully self corrected. Ash is holding strong.

2nd

Strength is a solid medium. Finish is long with notes of earth,cedar,bread,citrus,nutmeg & white pepper spice. The flavors in the profile remain consistent through the 2nd/3rd. 

Final/3rd

There is a mild coffee bean note joining the profile. The nutmeg becomes more prominent then comes back into balance.

Overall the Serino Royale Medio Robusto Gordo provides a very enjoyable smoking experience. Full flavored, medium strength and balanced with a spot on draw and good burn.

OM MANI Connecticut Toro 8/23/16

Appearance 

The Light brown colored wrapper has a few prominent veins. The seams are tight. It has a bit of tooth and a very light oil sheen.

Aroma 

Barnyard, fruit & hay on the wrapper. Barnyard,chocolate,fruit and a hint of spice.

Prelight Draw 

Tobacco,black licorice,cedar & spice.

1st

The initial draws show notes of cedar,leather and a hint of black pepper spice. The burn starts out good then develops a wave at the 1/2" point. The draw is just a pinch snug. The ash is salt&pepper gray, slightly flaky and stacked. 

2nd

A little bit into the 2nd/3rd the burn has almost fully self corrected. Flavors from the 1st continue into the 2nd/3rd. Black pepper begins to dominate the profile. After a half dozen draws the black pepper tapers off some and the fruity notes become more evident. Draw opens up. A mild coffee note joins the profile. Burn line goes off but quickly begins to correct. A tunnel opens up where the burn went off. 

Final/3rd

The finish is long with the black pepper dominant. The strength started medium and has moved to med/full. Burn has fully self corrected. Crushed red pepper joins the profile balancing the black pepper. 

Overall the OM MANI Connecticut provides an enjoyable smoking experience. The profile is complex and flavorful albeit dominated at times by the black pepper spice.

Magnate Green Connecticut Robusto 8/22/16

Appearance 

The light brown wrapper has a couple prominent veins. The seams are tight and nearly invisible. The cigar is toothy and has a light oil sheen. 

Aroma 

Tobacco,hay,cedar and a hint of spice on the wrapper. Cedar & cocoa at the foot.

Prelight Draw 

Cedar & hay.

1st

Initial draws reveal notes of cedar & hay with a faint hint of cinnamon spice. About 3/4" in the warm cinnamon joins the profile. The draw is perfect. The burn is spot on as well. The ash is salt&pepper gray and tight so far. It has a nice amount of smoke production. 

2nd

The strength goes from the high end of mild/med to medium+ a few draws into the 2nd/3rd. A coffee note is entering the profile. The finish is long with notes of cedar,hay,cocoa,coffee & warm cinnamon. The burn got a bit wavy but fully self corrected very quickly. Smoke production is at high. 

Final/3rd

The flavor profile stays consistent and creamy smooth. Tasty right to the nub.

Overall the Magnate Green Connecticut Robusto provides an enjoyable smoking experience. Well balanced and creamy smooth throughout. This would make a great morning smoke for mild/med smokers.

Magnate Green Maduro Churchill 8/21/16

Appearance 

The dark chocolate looking wrapper has tight, nearly invisible seams and very minimal veins. It has a little bit of tooth and a nice oily sheen.

Aroma 

Dark chocolate and a hint of spice on the wrapper. Dark chocolate, molasses and a hint of spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw 

Dark chocolate, molasses and spice on the lips and tongue.

1st

The dark chocolatey flavor surfaces on the initial draws along with the cinnamon spice. The molasses like flavor comes thru right away as well. The draw starts out a bit snug but that usually changes. The burn started out razor sharp but developed a wave. The ash is salt&pepper gray and fairly tight with a little stacking. The draw loosened up 1/2way thru the 1st/3rd. The ash tightens up in the 

2nd half of the 1st/3rd.

2nd

Smoke production has been in the moderate range. Strength has been medium. The burn develops a wide u shape but quickly begins to self correct. Flavors remain consistent. 

Final/3rd

The cinnamon spice becomes warm to begin the final/3rd. Burn self correction still in process. 

Overall the Magnate Green Maduro provides an enjoyable smoking experience. A balanced flavor profile of chocolate,molasses and warm cinnamon spice.

Magnate Green Habano Torpedo 8/20/16

Appearance 

The medium brown wrapper appears a bit mottled with a couple prominent albeit thin veins. The seams are tightly wrapped. The cigar is also a bit toothy but remember, that's not a bad thing... It's just a thing. The wrapper has a gritty fine sandpaper like finish as opposed to being smooth. There is a light oil sheen on the wrapper. 

Aroma 

Barnyardy yet has a hint of earthy aroma on the wrapper. Earth and sweetness at the foot.

Prelight Draw 

Cedar,sweetness,leather,

earth & spice

1st

Initial draws bring notes of leathery cedar with a mild sweetness along with a hint of cinnamon spice. The ash is medium gray semi tight with a bit of flake. The draw is a bit on the snug side of just right. The burn has a slight wave currently. There is a mild tang joining the profile. Draw opened up near the end of 1st/3rd. As I removed the ash it revealed a nice cone shaped ash. 

2nd

Moving into the 2nd/3rd the strength of the cigar moves to medium+ and the burn has fully self corrected. The flavor profile is still balanced with notes of leathery cedar,earth,a citrusy sweetness and mild tang and cinnamon spice. The cigar has a nice long finish. Burn has become a bit wavy again. Not a problem just an observation. 

Final/3rd

Burn has almost fully self corrected again. A mild coffee note has joined the profile. The coffee & cinnamon spice become the prominent flavors with the leathery cedar,earth and citrusy sweetness still present in the background.

Overall the Magnate Green Habano Torpedo provided an enjoyable smoking experience. Fairly well balanced and flavorful.

Magnate Green Corona King 8/18/16

Appearance 

Light brown wrapper with very small thin veins. The seams are tight. Their is a very light oil sheen. 

Aroma 

Cedar,barnyard,strong tobacco & a hint of spice on the wrapper. White cedar and a hint of spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw 

Cedar, dry toast, cinnamon & a hint of dried fruit.

1st

Initial draws bring strong notes of cedar and sour apples. The draw is almost effortless. Burn is almost razor sharp. The sour apples fade and a leather note replaces it. The ash is medium gray and mostly tight with a little stacking. The cinnamon spice is developing.

2nd

The 2nd/3rd starts with notes of cedar, leather, toast and cinnamon spice. The finish is long with an additional sweetness. The sour apple re emerges briefly. I notice a slight imperfection in the wrapper upon removing the band which slid of easily. The burn was off briefly due to the wrapper imperfection but self corrected nicely.

Final/3rd

The strength has been in the medium range throughout. The flavor remains consistent with a brief visit by the sour apple note. 

Overall the Corona King provided an enjoyable smoking experience. It has a nice flavor profile and is well balanced. Definitely worth a try. Could be right in your wheelhouse.

Serino Royale Maduro XX Sublime 8/14/16

Appearance 

Beautiful bands. The Ecuadoran Habano Oscuro Maduro wrapper is very attractive with very tight nearly invisible seams and nice chocolate brown color. The only visible veins on the surface are small and thin. There is a nice oily sheen. It also has a slight bit of tooth, which is not a bad thing.

Aroma

Strong rich tobacco, cedar and sweetness on the wrapper. 

Tobacco,cedar,earth,sweetness and a faint hint of spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw 

Fruity sweetness, earth, chocolate, rich tobacco and a hint of spice.

1st

Initial draws bring notes of cedar, earth and sweet fruity notes with a hint of spice in the background. The draw is smooth, the burn has a slight wave. The ash is light gray and fairly tight. The spice is leaning towards black pepper. The strength is already at medium+ a little past halfway in the 1st. It has very good smoke production. 

2nd

There is a bold espresso note joining the mix. The burn has fully self corrected. Draw is still smooth. Strength moving to med/full. The spice is a nutmeg with black pepper and well balanced so far. Near the end of the 2nd/3rd the strength goes to full. 

Final/3rd

The finish has remained consistent with notes of cedar,earth, fruity sweetness, milk chocolate,espresso and a nutmeg/black pepper spice all well balanced. Burn and draw remain spot on. The ash held strong and tight til removal at each 3rd. 

Overall the Serino Royale Maduro XX Sublime provided a very enjoyable smoking experience. Well balanced and flavorful right to the nub. I recommend you give them a try.
