Gilberto Oliva Reserva Toro 8/20/17

 

Appearance 

A medium brown colored wrapper with a few prominent veins. I had to use a magnifying glass to find the seams which are tightly wrapped. It has a nice oily sheen on the wrapper. The filler bunch is well packed with no apparent soft spots.

Aroma

Cedar, earth, spice on the wrapper. The same at the foot. 

Prelight Draw 

Cedar, earth, cinnamon spice.

1st

The initial draws bring notes of cedar with a hint of the cinnamon spice on the lips and the roof of the palate. The draw is snug. The burn is spot on. The ash is light gray and stacked. The draw opens up midway in the 1st/3rd. The strength starts out at mild/medium. The ash holds firm till removal.

2nd

The spice becomes more prominent. A nice soft leather note joins the profile. Smoke production is at the high end of medium. The finish is long with notes of cedar, earth, leather, black tea and cinnamon spice. Burn is still spot on. The strength has settled in at medium. 

Final/3rd

The well balanced flavor profile continues into the final/3rd. Draw & burn still spot on. 

Overall 

Gilberto Oliva Reserva Toro provides a very enjoyable smoking experience. A well balanced and flavorful profile with a great burn and draw. 

This cigar falls right between the G and the O in the strength and spicy categories. A great value smoke.
