Montecristo Epic No.2 Premium Selection 2007 12/21/19

Appearance
A medium brown colored wrapper with a couple of prominent veins. The seams are tightly wrapped and difficult to find. There is a very light oil sheen. The filler bunch is well packed with no apparent soft spots.

Aroma
Barnyard on the wrapper. Cedar, fruit, caramel and spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw
Vanilla, macadamia nuts, dried fruit, cedar, caramel and spice.

1st
The initial draws bring notes of vanilla, almond, cedar and a mild cinnamon spice. The draw is a bit snug but not surprising given the shape of the cigar. A little bit of that “Dominican twang” joins the profile. The spice increases noticeably. The ash is light gray and stacked. The burn is off at 45*. Implementing simple physics. The ash held firm and straight until removal.

2nd
Upon inspection of the working end I find several small tunnels, one right under the binder causing the uneven burn. The flavor notes combine to create a nice overall sweetness to the cigar. Black coffee notes join the profile. The tunnel under the binder has ended. The profile remains well balanced. The ash has become flaky. The finish is long with notes of cedar, vanilla, almond, caramel, Dominican twang, black coffee and cinnamon spice.

Final/3rd
The burn has almost fully self corrected. Draw has fully opened up. Midway in the final/3rd the tunnels are gone and the burn fully self corrects. The flavorful profile continues right to the nub.

Overall
The Montecristo Epic No.2 Premium Selection 2007 provides a vey enjoyable smoking experience. A complex, well balanced and flavorful profile with a snug draw and uneven burn.

Cory’s Blend #4 12/15/19

Appearance
A medium brown colored wrapper with a few prominent veins. The seams are tightly wrapped and difficult to find. It has a bit of tooth and is slightly mottled. Most of the oily sheen has dissipated.
The filler bunch is well packed with no apparent soft spots.

Aroma
Cedar, tobacco and a hint of spice on the wrapper. Tobacco and a hint of spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw
Cedar and a pinch of spice

1st
The initial draws bring notes of cedar. Notes of black pepper spice join the profile. The draw is spot on. The burn is straight except for the U shape on one side. The ash is salt&pepper gray and stacked. Strength is medium+. Smoke production is at the high end of medium range. Almond notes join the profile. The ash held firm till removal.

2nd
Upon inspection of the working end I find the tiny tunnel just under the binder causing the erratic burn. Some sweet notes like honey join the profile. The sweetness fades quickly. At the midway point of the cigar the burn has fully self corrected. The finish is long with notes of cedar, almond, faint honey sweetness and a cinnamon/black pepper spice combo.

Final/3rd
The flavorful profile rolls into the final/3rd. Smoke production moves to the high range. The well balanced and flavorful profile continues right to the nub.

Overall
The Cory’s Blend #4 provides a very enjoyable smoking experience. A well balanced and flavorful profile with a perfect draw and mildly erratic burn.

Strength is medium+. Smoke production is at the high range. The ash held firm and straight until removal.

2nd

DBL Cigars Extra Viejo Maduro Robusto 12/7/19

Appearance
The dark brown colored wrapper has a couple of thin veins. The seams are tightly wrapped and difficult to find. It has a square box pressed shape. It’s one of those cigars that feels more oily than it looks. The filler bunch is well packed but has a soft spot right behind the primary band. Despite a few imperfections in the wrapper leaf, it’s a good looking cigar.

Aroma
Earth, cedar and spice on the wrapper. Earth, dried fruit, molasses and spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw
Earth, dried fruit, molasses and spice.

1st
The initial draws bring notes of cedar and earth with a hint of spice. The flavor has a bit of “Dominican twang”. The draw is just right. The burn is a bit wavy. The ash is light gray and stacked. The ash dropped at about 1”. Smoke production is at the high range. Strength is medium. The spice which is a cinnamon/crushed red pepper combo is increasing in intensity as the cigar burns.

The ash is light gray and stacked on one side and tight on the other. The ash is starting to lean to one side. Peanut notes join the profile with a floral note alongside. The ash though looking very suspect held on till I removed it.

2nd
Upon inspection of the working end I find a large(1/4” diameter) tunnel which is the cause of the erratic burn. Strength & body start at medium. The ash is beginning to bloom on 1 side. Smoke production is at the medium range. The floral note has faded. Just past the midway point there is a sour/metallic note that fades just as quickly. The finish is long with notes of cedar, peanuts, coffee and warm cinnamon spice.

The initial draws bring notes of cedar and a little sugary sweetness. There is also a salty note that comes and goes quickly. There is a very distant spice joining the profile. The ash is light gray and stacked. The draw is a tick on the snug side. The burn is slightly wavy. This cigar won’t be winning any long ash contests as the first 1” of ash just dropped on the deck.
