Gurkha Marquesa Toro 4/21/19

 Appearance
A dark brown colored wrapper with a few prominent veins. The seams are tightly wrapped and difficult to find. There is a nice oily sheen on the wrapper. The filler bunch is well packed with no apparent soft spots.

Aroma
Earth, cedar, dried fruit and spice on the wrapper. Dried fruit, cedar, earth and spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw
Cedar, dried fruit, earth, sugar cane, cinnamon and black pepper spice.

1st
The initial draws bring notes of cedar, earth and a leathery texture with a pinch of black pepper spice in the background. The draw is effortless. The burn starts out a bit wavy just as the box pressed version did. The black pepper spice notes intensify right away to a dash. The ash is medium gray, stacked and flaky. The ash is beginning to curl and look suspect so I removed it just before the end of the 1st/3rd.

2nd
Upon inspection of the working end I find 2 large(1/4”diameter) tunnels which are causing the erratic burn. The smoke production is at the high end of medium range. The black pepper spice which was beginning to dominate the profile begins to taper back and cinnamon spice notes join in to balance the black pepper. Spent most of the 2nd/3rd using physics to get the burn, which had started to canoe, corrected.

Final/3rd
One large tunnel still remains. The flavor profile has remained consistent since the start. Strength is medium+. Profile remains consistent right to the nub.

Overall
The Gurkha Marquesa Toro provides a somewhat enjoyable smoking experience. A nice flavor profile with an effortless draw and very erratic burn. If I was not doing a review I would have put this one down early in the 2nd/3rd. Hopefully this was not indicative of the rest of the production. Bunchero needs to do a better job.

Gurkha Marquesa Toro Box Press 4/20/19

 Appearance
A dark brown colored wrapper with a few prominent veins. The seams are tightly wrapped and only visible due to some mottling. There are a couple imperfections in the wrapper as well. It has a light oil sheen. The filler bunch is loosely packed and a bit on the soft side. We’ll see if that affects the
experience.

Aroma
Earth, sugar, cedar and a hint of spice on the wrapper. Dried fruit, cedar, earth and a hint of spice at the foot.

Prelight Draw
Sugary, dried fruit, cedar, earth and cinnamon spice.

1st
The initial draws are very earthy along with notes of cedar and a pinch of black pepper spice in the background. The draw is effortless. The burn is a bit wavy. Smoke production is at the medium range. The ash is medium gray, stacked and a bit flaky. The dried fruit notes are a nice addition to the profile. The black pepper spice moves to a dash which is considerably more than a pinch(think in cooking terms). The ash held firm and straight until removal.

2nd
Upon inspection of the working end I find a couple of tunnels which are causing the mildly erratic burn. Notes of toast join the profile as well as espresso notes. The black pepper spice is balanced by a cinnamon spice note. The finish is long with notes of cedar, earth, dried fruit, espresso and a cinnamon/black pepper spice combo. The profile is well balanced and flavorful. Strength is medium+. The imperfections in the wrapper did not cause any issues. Cashew notes bring a creamy texture to the profile.

Final/3rd
The still present tunnels keep the burn erratic even while I use simple physics to correct. The blend causes plenty of salivation from start to finish. The flavorful profile continues right to the nub.

Overall
The Gurkha Marquesa Toro Box Press provides an enjoyable smoking experience. A complex, well balanced and flavorful profile with an effortless draw and erratic burn. The Marquesa also comes in a round Toro which I will review tomorrow.

The draw is perfect. The burn is off slightly but it’s early yet. Smoke production is in the high range. The ash is almost white in appearance with double nickel stacking. The strength starts at medium+ and begins building halfway through the 1st/3rd. At an inch and a half in the burn has almost fully self corrected. Ash holds till removal.

2nd
Upon inspection of the working end I notice a 1/4” wide tunnel which is the cause of the burn issue. The ash gets a bit flaky. The black pepper portion of the spice notes tapers back. The burn has a bit of a wave at the 3/4” mark. Draw is perfect. The ash is light gray and tight. The burn is self correcting. Dried red fruit notes are joining the well balanced profile. The white pepper spice has tapered off a bit. The ash held firm and straight till removal.

2nd
The flavor profile is very tasty as the white pepper spice comes back into balance with the cedar, earth and dried red fruit. Just the right amount of vegetable glue was used to secure the band and there was not even the slightest damage to the band upon removal. I admire the seams which are so tightly wrapped that they appear to be a line drawn on the wrapper, which speaks to the quality of construction. The burn line is now razor sharp. The body is med/full while the strength is still medium+. Some cinnamon notes join the white pepper for a nice spice combo.
